Polaris
Second trip to the mall

False alarm on Saturday
Suellen thinks a potted plant whose leaves were blown by the air conditioner set off the motion detectors. Starting to wonder if a few minor robberies might not be cheaper than paying for all this protection.

bought and made pasta for dinner around 10:30.

After a short trip to Sawmill. (Much driving in such a short time)

Set off the alarm
But apparently deactivated it before the alarm company noticed

Frog, Bear & Wild Boar
Or some combination thereof

Brain convened the newstaff outside the arena for a quick drink after work (well, after 5).

All-staff meeting for March, April, & May
2:30 - 5

At least I got $50 out if it, for sticking around on move day to work with Phil, Tim, & Bruce on the computers

We discussed the escalating charges the city employs to discourage numerous false alarms to the police and fire departments.

Too Many Cooks
Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe
1938 (or rather, MCMXXXVIII-- are Roman numerals really necessary?)

The publisher attempted a diagram of the building in which the murder was committed -- and it is almost plausible. I suspect (but haven't attempted to demonstrate) that the homes and rooms described in mysteries are often not really possible under the current laws of physics.

Set off the alarm
But remembered the password when the alarm company called, so we didn't get charged with a false alarm by the city.

Dinner in Bexley
Pizza on the porch
Stephanie was there, sharing a chair with the cat

A little cleaning here and there
Some watering, some laundry

Quiet
As loud as it was yesterday, today it is quiet. Sitting in the back yard, there are no sounds aside from the running water in the pond and the birds.

The robins favor the birdbath, splash and make a big production out of it. Often two come at once. The other birds tend to prefer the pond, and are less likely to share.

Didn't make it to church
9 a.m. was too early, and by 10:30 I still wasn't in the mood for "contemporary" music.

Isolation mode
Total words spoken today (actually from 9 p.m. Friday (conversation with James) until noon Sunday (several sentences to Stephanie in the garden):

"Hi" (somewhat startled, to a policeman peering over the backyard fence, as he chased someone down)

"Thanks" (to the cashier at Kroger -- I had run out of Coke)

I hadn't intended to be antisocial, but it was a nice (if short -- I've gone several days without actually speaking to anyone at all) break

M&D to Columbus

Noisy
So loud today. Cars, motorcycles, radios, saws, hammers, people laughing, yelling, a police chase on the block directed from a helicopter not far overhead, trucks, ...

Dreamed of working
Pulled a weed or two, that's about it

Ran to Oakland Nursery
For their "customer appreciation sale"

Got a flat of marigolds and one of snapdragons to plant at Portal Park -- the snapdragons in particular because that was what of the previous annuals had not been eaten off, so I thought they were likely to last

Had a long conversation with James at the park -- I was to not mind him, he was going to just sit there, and I should not mind while he drank his beer.

He was living at the Friends of the Homeless Shelter around the corner, which we both agreed was a good place to go to get back on your feet.

He had just gotten back into town from Cleveland, where he had been doing gardening for RTA (the public transit system, I gathered), but had been cheated on the pay terms, he said.

Originally from Columbus, he had spent the best five years of his life in prison, as he had time to pray and lead others in prayer.

He had recently been jumped by fifteen guys who beat up on him -- he had escaped, but vowed that it would not cause him to get a gun. He had never had one and never wanted one.

He has or had a wife whose kids he treated as his own -- and they still spoke to him. They had lived with both her parents and his parents, depending on which were less displeased with them at the time.

His wife had cheated on him, even though he paid for the car and took care of the kids, and worked long hours at G.D. Ritzy's (this must have been some time ago -- it's been awhile since Ritzy's went bankrupt), and so he left -- even though he forgave her.

We also had an extensive conversation on theology -- he is an Apostolic, though he admitted that the different denominations all worship the same God in the end, so it doesn't matter.

We shook hands and parted.

Seminar on public companies
By Researchstock.com

In five years, we will look back on this as the worst economic times since the great depression

Wall Street firms historically made money from research, trading operations and investment banking. No one pays for research anymore, trading is unprofitable, so that leaves investment banking -- a reliance which lead to the problems of the last bubble. This has not been fixed.

Analysts generally cover only the largest public companies, leaving smaller companies no access to the money market. Dave Thomas would never have gotten Wendys off the ground in this environment. How many other potential Wendys are out there that we aren't funding?

Boards of directors are not currently structured to protect the rights of shareholders, which is their putative reason for existence. Audit committees rarely have even a CPA, compensation committees often have directors with clear conflicts of interest (z.B. family members of the CEO, executives of companies that do considerable business with the company in question).

Most tech companies are still overvalued. Small companies, that analysts generally do not cover, are often undervalued.

M&D on the internet
The connection was dropped, and that caused confusion, but IM was successful again tonight. We'll try email again tomorrow.

Bexley Copy Shop
Is in Bexley Square -- the one place on Main St. I didn't look.

Portal Park
Walked over and weeded 100s of thistles -- I hadn't brought gloves, so I can still feel some of the thorns in my fingers as I type.

M&D on the internet
We got the username and password successfully typed in the right place, and it worked.

Talked to Steven next door
He hopes to get a scaffold up in the not too distant future, fix the box gutters and repair the windows.

He had seen Flag Wars and wanted to know if I had. No, but sometime.

Polybag week
And another lunch with Rick on deadline day -- I was walking down Nationwide Blvd. and he drove up beside me, so we went to Grinders.

Utilized the USPS
By mailing a drawing and a disk to Amy

So rare it is worth noting -- also I had to call Amy to find out her address (I only know how to drive there).

Met with Pastor Talley
To talk about Communications ideas and the church calendar

Going to try Yahoo

Emergency OTENA Trustees meeting
To address the Michael Ross issue.
The twenty holes in the ground are being auctioned next Friday. It appears that a company associated with Michael Ross would like to bid on them, purchase them minus any debts, and try again. Not an exciting prospect.

Ohio Turnpike
Reconstruction is poorly planned, poorly designated, and cost us a miserable two extra hours (and we had to pay for the privelege).

I tried very hard not to be rude to the tollbooth attendant, but he started out by asking me (rhetorically, of course), how I was. He didn't want to know, and knowing that he wasn't responsible, I didn't really want to tell him. It took a lot of willpower not to answer, and Amy wasn't convinced that I succeeded in not being rude.

From there, we had a pleasant (self-designed) detour on US 20, through among other small towns, Bellevue, which was celebrating a sesquicentennial with fireworks. We watched what appeared to be the finale, and then, I suppose, the encore?

To Akron

Quick boat ride
Before taking leave of the north

Out past Coats' Point, back in through Marquette Bay and Wilderness Bay; there is a strong breeze blowing, but out from the shore so that there is little roughness out on the big lake, and very little swell near in the Les Cheneaux entrance

Drove the boat in close to what I think was the Seiberlings place on Long Island -- the boathouses are huge, complete with fireplaces, but currently in some little state of disrepair

Hamburgers
For noon dinner
