An
accuser's inside status puts the White House on the defensive
| NYT
"The
White House carefully manipulated public opinion, never quite lied,
but gave the very strong impression that Iraq did [9/11],"
[Richard Clarke] said, adding: "They did know better. We told
them. The C.I.A. told them. The F.B.I. told them. They did know
better. And the tragedy here is that Americans went to their death
in Iraq thinking that they were avenging Sept. 11, when Iraq had
nothing to do with Sept. 11. I think for a commander in chief and
a vice president to allow that to happen is unconscionable."
But
at least Mr. Bush can make fun of his "mistake."

I
am at a loss to explain how anyone could think this makes for a good
laugh line:
...
[President]
Bush showed a photo of himself looking for something out a window
in the Oval Office, and he said, "Those weapons of mass destruction
have got to be somewhere."
The
audience laughed. I grimaced. But that wasn't the end of it. After
a few more slides, there was a shot of Bush looking under furniture
in the Oval Office. "Nope," he said. "No weapons
over there." More laughter. Then another picture of Bush searching
in his office: "Maybe under here."
This
was his ... well, excuse for taking the country to war. This was also
his justification under international standards.
An
apology would be appropriate. Or even a reasonable explanation.
Unfortunately,
absent the apology or the explanation, his performance fails to show
the president's humility and ability to laugh at himself -- it rather
mocks those who believed what he said, and those the world over who,
though they tried, where marginalized in their opposition.

Smart: Buyers try to jump the queue | NYT
As
a romantic icon, the Smart car is more Woody Allen than Humphrey
Bogart. Its beguiling appearance exudes a Jetsonesque quality that
would be at home in a supporting role in "Sleeper." The
two-seater, also marketed as the ForTwo, is short enough to park
on congested city streets with its bumper to the curb. End-to-end,
two could share a single metered parking space.
