To
Akron
3:30
-- 7 p.m.
A
long time for a two hour drive. Slowdowns on I-71at Fifth opened up
to tolerable conditions until just before I-270. Then the traffic
stopped. We worked our way quickly to the right and got off without
too much trouble at Polaris, thinking to try an alternate route. The
radio said 71 was abominable to Morrow County (20 miles?), so staying
the course was a profoundly unappetizing choice.
Route
3 was slow, but moving. We finally lost the foul smelling truck directly
in front of us.
Still
moving slowly, until we hit Centerberg (ville? something like that).
The two lane road through town inched - inched forward.
Mt.
Vernon was deadly slow, too. We were still surviving, though, still
hanging in there, until the way out of Mt. Vernon and Route 3 was
closed. Detoured. Back to Route 36, which we had left some minutes
and a few miles ago.
A
detour from Hell, it went on, and on, and on; the road turned more
and more rural, curve after curve, and on and on.
And
then there was the pickup truck. Driving 40 mph. With bales of straw
hanging precariously over both sides of the rear.
Amy
plotted routes back to I-71; it grew dark, and began to rain.
After
abandoning all hope, Route 3 reappeared, and then Route 60 to get
back to 71.
No
ramp where there ought to have been a ramp condemned us to drive in
circles around Asheville (or some such town), following signs "To
71" that seemed always just a little further off. Routes of circles,
triangles, (no squares -- none of the roads were that straight), backtracking,
left, right.
I-71
moved forward for several miles, and then stopped suddenly into a
new parking lot. Yet another CD ended and we were still on the road.
We took a break at an overparked rest area, (though the restrooms
thankfully were underutilized), and then made a break for 224 unstead
of waiting until 18 to Akron. Not I-71 moved much better, and we finally
pulled in to Fairlawn after 7.
