seem longer than the posted 1.6 miles by the end of it, though.

BALLETMET'S
RESTAGING OFFERS LITTLE EXCITEMENT, UNEVEN CHOREOGRAPHY
| Barbara
Zuck | Dispatch
Casts
alternate throughout the weekend. Last night's leads, West
and Suslov, make a handsome and appealing couple. Suslov steals
the show with his high jumps, pure classicism, musicality
and royal demeanor -- though Gibbs' many masculine balletic
flourishes make a strong second.
The
telling of the tale is straightforward and easy to follow
though the stuff with the Stepsisters and Stepmother in Act
1 felt as if it went on too long. One puzzlement: After all
the emphasis on the glass slipper and finding the right foot
to fit into it, the Prince never actually kneels down and
puts the shoe on Cinderella.
The
use of children dancers (more Academy students) as the hour
numbers of a clock to toll midnight remains one of the ballet's
cleverest scenes.
Sets
and costumes are attractive but -- save for a gorgeous coach
with two white horses (dancers) -- notably unspectacular.
For
budgetary reasons, BalletMet used taped music and not an orchestra
this weekend. It's too bad from just about every perspective,
though one sympathizes with the kind of tough decision-making
many arts groups are facing right now.
The
lack of live music made the assembled score of selections
by Glazunov sound less urgent, less emotional, more detached
-- again, generic. It certainly gave the event an aspect of
unreality.

'Cinderella'
to dance without orchestra
Tony Goins | Business

"Seeing
'Cinderella' in the Ohio Theater with a tape recording is
like going to a Buckeye game with a taped marching band,"
Douglas Fisher, president of the [Central Ohio Federation
of Musicians], said in a press release Wednesday.
...
It
would cost BalletMet about $52,873 to use a crew of 47 musicians
for the run, [executive director Cheri] Mitchell said. It
pays $18,500 for the show's 29 dancers.
