The boathouse doors
Memories of the lake will have to suffice for another winter.

ABOVE Light. The new alley illumination.

Barley's Smokehouse
For a gathering of Amy's college friends. We ended up having a good time, though Amy was unconvinced until we got there.

Electric work
Mike installed a new thermometer in the attic fan; a new light fixture in the back hallway upstairs; flood lights on the back porch alley and garage door; and moved the light switch in the attic so that you no longer have to walk all the way across the attic to turn on the light.

Atticus finds the kitchen counter
He had a couple times the day before, and Amy was prepared, with pans of water all along the counter. And more pans on the kitchen stools. This leap to the counter brought down torrents of water and much noise.

Really flying
Beautiful weather, good flight, many pictures.

On a previous flight, Al had gotten in trouble with the control at OSU's Don Scott airport, (at one point escalated to OSU saying "Get out of my airspace"), so he was eager to avoid that area. Thus we flew west and around it -- Far Far west, it seemed like by way of Indiana, but we got around it and finally found the zoo, our goal at the time.

ABOVE Columbus skyline. From the southwest.

BELOW Ohio State University. Ohio Stadium, top right; St. John Arena, top center; Schottenstein Center, bottom. New Lane Avenue bridge over Olentangy River, center.

ABOVE "I don't understand." "It just doesn't make any sense."

We we hoping to fly the newer plane, which has three headset jacks, so we could all talk to each other. After waiting half an hour while the mechanics repaired it, they pushed it out and tested the engine.

And drove it back in to the hanger.

The third time back, when it still didn't seem to be making any sense, we settled on a different plane with only to jacks. Janet got to snap pictures, and I attempted to navigate from the back seat, leaning forward so the cord reached the dashboard.

Pauli's Pizza
Take 'n' bake, place in German Village

Business has been weak all month, the (only) guy said -- except today. All kinds of orders today. He apologized for the wait. We had planned to walk Charlie around German Village after ordering, and we got a short walk in before it started to rain. The we decamped for the car as it drizzled for a little bit. We had the back door to the house open ready to duck inside as the first crash of thunder shook our ears.

The pizza was very good.

Flying
A little, around southwest Columbus.

ABOVE Our pilot: Al. Not Alan. We walked into the building and Janet said "we're here to fly with Alan."

The two guys looked at each other blankly. "There's no Alan here -- are you sure you have the right place?"

"This is where I flew out of last time with Alan."

"I think there's an Alan in the next building over, maybe you should try there."

Janet looked through her purse, found his business card, and handed it to one of them.

"Oh, Al! I'll go get him."

ABOVE The plane. Janet takes pictures by hanging her camera out the open window -- which stays open due to the air pressure when we're in the air. Closer to the grround, and flying more slowly, I have to hold it open for her. Our flight was cut short as the haze kept getting worse and taking pictures was becoming less and less useful. But I think Janet really gave up when Al said "I'm lost" when he couldn't find a visual point of reference. Not that we were really lost, of course -- therre were plenty of numbers and coordinates available if we really needed them.

Longest deadline day in a long time
I really didn't think we were in such bad shape, even at noon.

The statue controversy
Took up extra time, too.

First, the bust as photographed by Janet, as it will appear in HomeFront magazine:

The magazine's editor called the homeowner (in whose house the bust resides), to ask for an identification of the piece. The homeowner responded (in the tone of "how uncultured you must be to not know") that it is obviously a reproduction of Michelangelo's David.

No, it's not.

An actual reproduction of the bust of the David:

Janet located the actual representation not long afterward:

Apollo.

The editor called back the homeowner. She was not inclined to revise her position.

The cutline was changed to read "a Greek god."

Will the homeowner know that David is neither Greek nor a god?

We'll find out on publication.

Out and about
To Hausfrau Haven to find some port and wine; to the Book Loft to find something to read (for Amy -- she was unsuccessful); up to Franklin for a quick walk with Charlie; a street over to deliver the mail that is regularly misdelivered here.

And then dinner, by 8:30 or so. Roasted garlic tomato soup, fresh homemade pumpkin focaccia, and lettuce salad.

A Mighty Wind
A strange movie, more subtle than the movie pastiche of a dog show, though it seemed to star all the same people
. (DVD)

A short walk
Up to Franklin and around. Finally it was not too hot to be outside for a little while.
