Gog
and Magog and more
Having over the years conflated Gog and Magog and the Nephalim
of Genesis and remembered the whole thing in parts and pieces,
we actually googled a few of the terms that my mind had brought
forth in reference to giants in the Bible.
The
giants before Noah are not named as Gog and Magog, but are Nephalim,
possibly the offspring of humans and fallen angels.
King
James Genesis 6:4: There were giants in the earth
in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came
in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them,
the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
New
American Standard Genesis 6:4: The Nephilim were
on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons
of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children
to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of
renown.
So
where in the Bible do Gog and Magog appear? One of the sons
of Japheth (and thus grandson of Noah) is so named in Genesis.
And after that, the names appear together in Ezekiel and Revelation.
New
RSV Ezekiel 38:2: Mortal, set your face toward Gog,
of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.
Prophesy against him
Revelation
20: and will come out to deceive the nations at the
four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, in order to gather
them for battle; they are as numerous as the sands of the
sea.
This
last is more similar to their appearance in the Qur'an, where
Gog and Magog are warring tribes that have been sealed inside
the earth. At the end of the world, they will break free and
join in destruction of the earth.
Outside
of the Bible? As giants, Gog and Magog guard the London Guildhall,
London's city hall, as they have for centuries. How they came
to England seems a matter of dueling traditions, each nonetheless
involving the thirty-some willful daughters of a Roman emperor.

But
back to the giants who are not Gog and Magog: In the Preservationist,
Noe (Noah) is assisted at several turns by the neighboring giants,
who are able to carry timbers of the necessary length for the
ark he has been commanded to build.
And
is Noe pronounced "No" or "No-E?" Is Noe-Bixby
Road "No-Bixby" or "No-E Bixby?" (This
came up at the annual choir party -- I had never heard it pronounced
No-E Bixby before, but the pronouncer was one who ought to know.)
Is Thomas
Noe "No" or "No-E?" (Because we ought
to be able to pronounce our scandals correctly.)
